Before winter really arrives

A personal challenge - try and write something every day for January 2025

***************

There is a crunchy crispy note to our footsteps as we walk up the side of Dewbarrow Ridge.  Puddles are lidded with a layer of ice and the air although cold, feels and smells earthy and fresh.  It is really good to be out. Snow and icy conditions have been forecast to start this evening - winter is on her way - so we are out on the hills making the most of the lull before the storm.

Although there were several cars stashed here and there along the lane, it appears we are the only ones up in the woods.

Some walks, I come home tired but happy, others I need to recover before I can appreciate them, but today's.... today's five miles have left me feeling elated!

***********************

Birds either spotted or heard:

Buzzard, Rooks, Nuthatch, Yaffel (Green Woodpecker), Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Crows and the most beautiful of Barn Owls.

  2. Ooh, so different to our days at the moment. Love the lichen and is it called reindeer moss?
Various birds heard and did you see them too. Keep warm, take care & hugs.

    1. I was tempted to agree with you re; Reindeer moss, but checked and apparently that variety is an oak moss, which I have agree to as it was growing on a rather old oak tree :)

    1. Thank you ☺️ it is one of our favourites (the walk) and I was tempted to write a full scale blow by blow tale of the walk but decided against, this month is about gentle snapshots of every day x

There isn't much snow here, but it feels as though proper winter has arrived overnight. Xx

  6. We have a couple round where we live so are lucky to see them when we are walking later in the day, however this one just burst out of the hedge out towards us, prob had not realised we were there and then flew from tree to tree just in front of us for about half a mile - was lovely
