Stuck in the dining room whilst Himself is scouring channels through layers of old tiles, plaster and brick so we can sink the electrical cables into the wall. Unlike the previous 'make-over' where the tiles were placed DIRECTLY over the cables - which explains a lot about our wobbly walls in the kitchen....The horrors we keep finding give us new shivers daily, however, what makes it worse - we know who did these 'incredible botch jobs' and he was a builder in the village, used to live in our house .....apparently has only recently retired. How many other houses has he erhm worked on?

Autumn has crept into the bottom of our garden and sprinkled liberal amounts of fungi.
If they were not so cute I would be despondent at the march on of the seasons towards winter.

As an antidote - I have been both baking and cooking.
More spicy pumpkin soup to be eaten with crusty bread. And for the first time ever, I saved the seeds, seasoned and roasted them with great success. So much so we have bought a huge bag from a reputable wholesaler and when they land, I shall be roasting them for snacking :)

I have a 'base' flapjack recipe which I use and just change the 'guest' ingredients, this week's was pecan nut and chia seeds - very tasty, sadly they did not last long. Himself has put in a request for a repeat baking.... I need to be able to see/get to my kitchen first.

One very fed up dog - she's taken herself off to bed and given up all hope of a walk (silly girl you were out earlier and never mind the construction, it is bucketing it down outside)
Ok, that is my day in a nutshell. I can see plaster dust swirling out of the kitchen door and hear enthusiastic wall chipping, at least the stone cutter has been switched off - it is both very noisy and a generous dust maker.....

Some friends decided to tear down a stud wall between the kitchen and dining room in their new house. The previous owner had told them he had put it up himself. They were horrified to find that he had insulated the gap between the layers of plaster board with cardboard egg boxes. The previous owner was a fireman!
ReplyDeleteOMG - that is terrible!!
Deletewe'd found holes in the walls filled with card beneath the plaster and multiple layers of tiles upon tiles but I think your story definitely worse!π
I loved your art in the last post, the shroom photos are magical and Willow is so pretty she melts my heart! Good luck with the building work, been there, done that, I can remember that endless dust as if it were yesterday! xxx
ReplyDeleteSThank youπ
DeleteDon't be fooled by those big melty chocolate eyes.... You should have heard the hefty dog sized sighs and hurrumphs at the slovenly walking duties her humans seem to have sunk toπ
You can find some worrying things when you are renovating/having building work done. Paving in our garden had been laid over the level of the damp proof course, so it all had to be lowered. Then we discovered the drains had been blocked with a lovely mixture of old building materials/cement etc. (That was thirty years ago, when we moved in!) At least you had the baking and the soup to cheer you all up. Willow is definitely giving you the 'side eye' in that photo!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes
Ellie
Yes, all the building horrors we are discovering we have lived with for years! Makes us wonder what other "gems" he left us!
DeleteSo sorry about your ongoing building work. It's hell, and maybe Willow is reflecting your state of mind. Good luck! x
ReplyDeleteIt is keeping us "entertained" !π
DeleteLoving mushroom season! Who puts tiles over cables? Gosh! Good you're getting it sorted, have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteOh we've found other such delights, heating pipes just below the carpet, not sunk into the floor boards. Water pipes nailed (yes .. nailed) to the floor directly through the copper. Only leaking once the nail was removed....
DeleteWe live in an old house and I’ve actually lived here for over 30 years. When I bought it every thing looked lovely on the surface but everything I do uncovers another botch job that needs sorting out. My brother and my sister both live in new houses and I am very envious of the fact they can actually decorate a room in a weekend. I pull paper off and have to get the plasterer in πππ
ReplyDeleteWe either had the same builder all those years ago or we live in the same house!π
DeleteIt makes you wonder how many homes are hiding botch jobs beneath the wallpaper π
Yikes! It will be reassuring for you to have everything sorted and put right. I will also be toasting some pumpkin seeds this week - they are delicious aren't they. Once I start eating them, I can't stop. X
