Nothing says SPRING more than ...💚🌿☀️

Nothing says SPRING more than the teeniest tiny seedlings filling my greenhouse and filling my happy heart!

I had a 'date with the dentist' first thing this morning and I promised him that I would not bite him. He gave a nervous giggle and a worried look so I smiled cheerfully (whilst inwardly berating myself for my nervous quip hahah)

As soon as I escaped, me with all my teeth and nerves intact, the dentist with a full compliment of fingers and thumbs - I returned home, clicked on the kettle and with the dog and the cat in tow, went into the garden to decompress. I have 'history' with dentists and although I am fully aware that the modern way of dentistry is far kinder and more patient orientated, I still have nightmarish memories from my teenage years of a dentist from hell....

....Aaaaaand .. breathe - the scent of damp soil, that soft green fragrance with a hit of crisp cold spring air.

I'll have to stop swanning around (still slightly over dressed for gardening) and crack on - the small area I have chosen to be a potager garden needs a fair bit of work doing. It had been a flourishing rhubarb bed which produced more fruiting stalks than we could consume, so last year I dug up most of the crowns and rehomed them leaving their bed looking an utter waste ground - today that (hopefully) will change.

I will however, have to wander around with a thoughtful look on my face, mug of tea in my hand, a rather befuddled dog and supervisory cat as I get my self primed for a bit of physical work

So - what have you planned for your spring garden?
I want to be able to devote a better level of care to my own garden this year, for years it has had to play second fiddle to my work commitments. I also need to take into consideration my rickety hands - they need a little more care too.

But I can't wait to enjoy my garden this year 💚🌿☀️

One last thing that really shouts to me that it is spring?

  1. Your seedlings are all looking healthy and strong, I have just started my tomato seeds, and will hold off sowing my beans and peas, but the itch is there to get going.

    1. Still waiting for my tomato seedlings - however the kale is romping ahead and I have potatoes chitting in the kitchen - they are going to be pot grown this year - I've no space in the garden for them.

  2. I noticed that I had been staring at leaves of a plant which were just sitting in a jar of water this morning...the marvel of life which continues even when cilantro is cut for seasoning. These little shoots exclaim the same wonder for me.

    1. It is so encouraging at this time of the year when all these little roots and shoots wriggle into action - certainly gladdens my heart!

  3. I do a great deal of walking about and looking in my small back garden, but I enjoy the time I spend like this. I need to do some potting on and also sowing a few seeds. Some of the seed sowing will be done tomorrow, I hope. I share your dislike of dentists - I had to see some frightful ones as a child and until mid-teenage years, and that put me off for life. A necessary evil, unfortunately, but I 'm glad to hear both of you survived unscathed.
    Best wishes

    1. There is something cathartic in wandering around and checking the back garden - a form of love both for the garden and for you!
Another dentist horror story from the past - thank goodness they seem a more friendly these days!

  4. Snap, I've been to see the Hygenist today and now we've moved I've found a fabulously kind Dentist as I had a terrible experience with my last one when he shouted at me and told me I was stupid! I never went back. Isn't it lovely to see all the plants bursting into leaf and bud. Xx

    1. I had one who accused me of giving my toddler fruit juice in a bottle - which I most definitely did not do - even when I protested he just flicked his hand up and went 'pah' - my toddler had fallen and smacked his lovely brand new toofies on the edge of a bath and broke them both - so it was assumed that he'd consumed sugared drinks which had crumbled them - the dentist just would not believe me. I never went back to them.

  5. I hate going to the dentist too. Also down to an archaic and sadistic school dentist methinks. I have finally potted up the sweet peas I bought a couple of weeks ago. I think if I’d left them any longer I would have lost them. I couldn’t believe we didn’t have a suitable pot but a visit to a friend found a random pot the perfect size that wasn’t destined for use this year. What a win 😀

    1. I am going to keep my sweet peas inside a little longer - this weekend is promising rubbish weather and I don't want to kill them off! haha
I love how gardeners share things :)

    2. I must admit as I was writing my comment I was contemplating moving them to somewhere with a bit of shelter as it looks like they may take a battering 🙈🙈🙈

  6. How lovely is your potted bluebell? Ours are imminent, I love looking out of the window and seeing the haze on blue leading down the garden.
Jon had a similar experience with the dentist as a teenager, my dentist is as kind and gentle as can be but he's still a nervius patient.
I've not done anything with the garden in ages, it wsa my saviour during lockdown but its back to being a wild inconvenience again now! xxx

    1. Interesting how many folk have had a bad experience of dentists - wonder why they were such a sadistic lot ?! Thank goodness the new generation of dentists have had gentle bedside manner lessons 😊

  7. Another one with bad dentist experiences..compounded by an unfeeling and bullying mother...
But thanks to grandma I started making friends with dentists!
Still met a few I didn't like over the years..but thankfully I've got a good one now..him and his wife are friends..and fellow cyclists!
My garden is lagging behind...cold...and wet..

    1. I feel for you with the weather and this bank holiday weekend has definitely started off wet and windy. (Thanks Dave)
I've been rather surprised how many of us come bearing dental related scares/scars of one type or another - thank goodness that profession seems to have modernised its patient/professional interactions

  8. I was also at the dentist yesterday. I feel anxious before every visit, and I'm sure it stems from horror stories I used to hear. And yet I've never had a bad experience - my dentist is really lovely.
I've yet to make any sort of effort in the garden this year, as I'm still waiting for the weather to improve. X

    1. Another at a dentist! it must have to do with the time of year (or something??!)
The weather has definitely been a bit hit and miss and certainly makes gardening a little tricky at the moment x

  9. I do so agree with you about seedlings - they lift the spirits. Happy gardening, and look after those 'rickety hands' of yours. x

    1. I think it is the promise they bring - the fact the seasons have turned which triggers their growth and the promise of warmer weather and something more hopeful about the coming year.

  10. Yes, little seedlings, like little lambs, mean so much. I've a few seeds that have germinated too and some that have not (yet!). One of my crowns fell off today so I had to go to the dentist..... it is sorted for now but ..... x
