Knowing today was going to be bitterly cold with a sharp wind and leaden skies I decided that, other than "Willow walks", the day was going to be spent decluttering.
When my boys were little and they had to tidy their bedrooms, they would become overwhelmed so I devised a "tidy up zone" plan. Choose a section and just do that and do it well. Admittedly the sections they did were quite small but they were left nice and neat and as they grew so did the tidy up zones.Using the same psychology on me, I started in the north corner of the dining room and selected the shelving unit to launch operation declutter, and to increase the 'accountability', I took before and after photos as further incentive.Willow was NOT sure about this - surely she should get out and have her walk FIRST? Well that was the plan and no sooner than we crossed the road and the wind hit her little red ears - the snarky collie side eye she shot me over her shoulder was enough to make me chortle. Still we managed just shy of a couple of miles before we both called time and sped our way home to warm up and get out of that WIND!
With her wrapped up in her bed and her sleepy eyes watching me, I decanted the contents of the shelves onto the dining-room table, cleaned the unit (we have a wood burner and everything needs a regular wipe down). I worked my way through each book - with several not making the grade and then the ornaments, cones of carpet wool, crafting tins and sewing tubs all were removed, cleared and moved to their correct homes. Pictures were removed, a tatty basket demoted to the greenhouse and twisty witch sticks burnt in the woodburner.
There is now a 'charity shop box' nicely filling up - and it has made me feel positive about giving the whole house the 'tidy up zone' treatment a section at a time.
I've been going through my stuff, if I don't use or want it and daughter is not interested then it goes, its a good feeling.
ReplyDeleteIt is most definitely π
ReplyDeleteThere must be something in the air, we've been clearing stuff out, too! x
ReplyDeleteI wonder if we're all twitchy for better weather so to burn off that 'got to be doing something ' energy we're tackling indoor tasks we usually avoid?!
DeleteDownsizing and moving made us (mostly me) declutter. Its a good feeling looking at a tidy space. I love your hare picture. Xx
ReplyDeleteThank you Gill, it is one I painted a few years ago and couldn't bring myself to sell it π
DeleteThis is a focus for us too this year … though I say that every year. So far we have done the bathroom and the lounge … I picked the easiest two rooms first lol. I’m breaking myself in slowly. I’ve also started keeping a list of what we’ve sold, donated or chucked so I can keep track of how much stuff I’ve managed to evict from our space. I’m quite ruthless but hubby not so much. He has to have not used something for about 10 years for him to start to believe he may no longer need it π
ReplyDeleteMy other half is a bit like that, I dread when we'll tackle the garage as he hoards things...just in case.... And has for years. I have a little more control in the house but in the garage? π¬π¬ Nope
DeleteI have been attempting to de-clutter for a while now - thirty-something years of accumulated stuff and it is too much! I am not finding it easy at all, but a little bit at a time is the way to go. It will be an ongoing project for me.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you are doing a great job with your de-cluttering. It has felt seriously cold here today so I admire you going for braving the weather for your walks.
Best wishes
Ellie
Small sections at a time is the only way. Before and after photos are good incentive as are regular mugs of tea!
DeleteEllie - blogger is once again not letting me comment on your blog again - sorry!
DeleteDon't worry at all - blogger is a law unto itself!
DeleteBest wishes

It sounds like a great start! I’d like to downsize but the decluttering is daunting.
ReplyDeleteI stick the radio on, have a mug of tea, chose my tidy up zone and completely empty it, clean it and put back only what should be there - one drawer at a time. Can't rush these thingsπ
DeleteYour house always looks so lovely that it's hard to believe you have clutter. I feel better about mine now! So glad to hear Willow's been able to hurtle without her lead. It must be a bit nerve-racking for you though.
ReplyDeleteIt was definitely a now or never moment fortunately the fetch and return games we have been playing have paid off and she bounds back very happily
DeleteNext step is to reduce how far ahead she goes before returning under her own steam - but far for my liking
That last comment was from me!

DeleteMore pics please of Willow! Good luck with the training.
DeleteWhat a great way to de-clutter, and well done. I think that's a way forward for me, too. I know I clean the kitchen and my car that way, so de-cluttering should be a doddle.
ReplyDeleteI suppose every one has their preferred way, it is just the incentive that needs .... Ummm.... incentivising!π
DeleteHa! This was to be my task with an extra day off this week, however what appears to be a touch of Subclade K (flu) has been doing the family rounds…and where there are grandchildren there are super-spreaders. It seems to have got me so in reality very little has been done. Thank goodness for cosy blankets, hot water bottles, paracetamol and ibuprofen…also making the grade the ice machine! Xx
ReplyDeleteThere is a rather strange lurgy going around here at the moment, a weary making virus, rubbish appetite, no energy and difficulty in keeping warm, but without being out and out poorly. Feel better soonx
DeleteYes, decluttering! I've been chipping away at this task for years now, prompted by our move here (nearly 11 years now....). I've just recently found an outlet for my surplus craft treasures and will make a major start on this as soon as the lurgy goes.... It is good to open a drawer an find it is not bursting! So, pick your next spot and have fun! x
