It's raining cats and dogs☔

It is dark and wild outside. Trees dance and contort in the wind and sheets of rain dash against the windows. Himself has already left for work and the cat who chose to slip outside very quickly returned, spiky and wet then stalked off to bed to sleep off her brief but horrendous outdoor experience.
I am sitting downstairs listening to the wind howl round the chimney and scream past the kitchen.  I, like the cat, have also been out. Willow and I galloped down to the garden and back in record speed. Me because the weather was foul, her because her breakfast was calling her rather loudly!

I am not keen on central ceiling bright lights, so we have side lights, stringed lights or standard lamps in all the rooms. Sitting in the dining room I am gently bathed in a soft yellow glow of stringed café lights above my head and the repeated reflected pattern on the wet window while the garden lashes back and forth outside rather pleases me.

The last few mornings - even before Willow - I have woken before the alarm, unusual for me as I am not a lark but more of a night owl. However I think I might try and harness this recent 'superpower' as I want to make the absolute most of my new freedom and having a dog who thinks any time is a good time to do 'things' just might help!

Later: Having just come back from a quick dog loop - I am beginning to think that having a dog, in the northern hemisphere, in winter ... is certain type of masochism ........

An increasingly soggy dog with her rather damp owner not far behind

This gentle waffly post about nothing in particular is more about getting me into blogging regularly again than I actually have anything to say!

Hope you are staying safe and out of Storm Chandra, I saw several branches down and a damaged roof in the village.
What do you do with a dog on a day like this? Bearing in mind I can not even blink without Willow going 'GREAT! - you moved - what adventure shall we do next huff huff huff' 😆

  1. Our cat Lilly is curled in her favourite spot, sensible feline, I think I will stay close to her. I much prefer lamps around rooms, we rarely have the main lights on.

  3. I actually enjoy your description of “nothing days”. For what it is worth.

  4. I ventured out into the town this morning to meet a friend for tea - the rain and wind definitely wasn't nice, but seeing my friend was!

    1. I agree - if the weather is foul but the reason to be out is good - then it is worth it :)

  5. Sheva cat sat by the back door this morning and when I opened it, took one look and turned round. She then sat by the front door and we repeated the performance. She's now laying along the back of the settee. Xx

    1. Sheva is a lovely name and she seems to live up to her cat given right to be a diva!

  6. Waking a first light has started happening to me this last year...no idea why. Of course I need a window where I can see it. Oh my, your pets do give you interesting pursuits. Yes to blogging about just the environment around you!

    1. Even in Africa or here in the uk in summer - I used to be able to sleep in despite the light streaming through the winter. I think it is either the conditioning from years of getting up at 6am or ... and I am preferring this ... it is the excitement of NOT having to get and up and go to work, I can get up and do things I want to do. Just wish it was lighter when I do!

  7. It’s been rough here in The Midlands today too. We were expecting roofers to look at our chimney but it was no surprise that they were a no show. I had to go out but had a lovely day fulfilling school governor Health and Safety responsibilities at a primary school 😀

    1. I think, in the grand scheme of things, the village got of fairly lightly from what I saw yesterday, was watching the news and other pars of the uk were absolutely hammered. Not surprised your roofers decided to postpone!

  9. You are braver than me....I've stayed in today and moved furniture (small) around and cleaned as the wind howled around..it is still going strong even now...and cold draughts whistle through the smallest of gaps..

    1. I think your weather was much worse than it was here and it was awful here! I think I would have hunkered down if it was not for the all essential dog walk.

  10. I, too, am a night owl, but at the moment I have to be up by 6.30am to walk the dog - before it gets too hot. A top of 43 today, and at midday it is already 36. It has the same effect as your weather - largely confined to barracks.
I love your description of Willow being hyper alert to your every movement. I bet it's because she can't believe her luck and wants to make the most of every walk before they disappear as suddenly as they started. Your description of her previous life is heart wrenchingly sad. Dogs are so willing to be devoted, but are totally at the mercy of their humans' circumstances.

    1. I remember those super hot days (from Africa) when it was best to do things either very early or in the evening when it felt bearable. Although in the words of ... Noel Coward - 'Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun'😆

  11. Lovely to see that Willow didn't need her long lead yesterday morning. She already looks at home. Talking of walking dogs in the rain, I have discovered some wonderful trousers - waterproof on the outside and fleecy inside so you don't have to wear them over other trousers which makes them much easier for walking. x

    1. They sound interesting waterproofs. I have some that I bought some years ago that are 'fabric' with a mesh lining and they are lovely and warm without being that horrible hot and sweaty plastic feel.

  12. I recognise where you and Willow are walking! Yes, rather wet out there. I am smiling at the thought of Willow being happy to go out x
